1. Nieuws – Global protest against proposed controls on who uses French Government information
MADRID/PARIS 1- 35 civil society organizations and many international experts on freedom of expression from 25 countries today sent a letter (here <http://www.access-info.org/documents/documents/Letter_to_french_gov.en.pdf> ) to the French Minister of Interior Brice Hortefeux and members of the French parliament calling for the withdrawal of a proposed law allowing the authorities to carry out “behaviour checks” on members of the public and organisations wanting to reuse information obtained from public bodies.
2. Nieuws – UN Special Rapporteur/OAS Statement on Wikileaks
WASHINGTON/GENEVA – In light of ongoing developments related to the release of diplomatic cables by the organization Wikileaks, and the publication of information contained in those cables by mainstream news organizations, the United Nations (UN) Special Rapporteur on Freedom of Opinion and Expression and the Inter-American Commission on Human Rights (IACHR) Special Rapporteur for Freedom of Expression see fit to recall a number of international legal principles. The rapporteurs call upon States and other relevant actors to keep these principles in mind when responding to the aforementioned developments
3. Nieuws – Digital Heretics Journalism Award
PERUGIA – The award invites entries of online investigative journalism incorporating video, audio, text, photographs, animation (or a mix of these) which make innovative use of the internet (crowdsourcing, collaborative journalism, mash-ups, web 2.0, etc).
The reportage must have been published in 2010 and can be in Italian or English. The award is sponsored by Google and has a total prize fund of 10,000 euros. The deadline for submission is 28 February 2011. The award is open to anyone under the age of 35 at the time of publication. The winners will be presented with the awards during the 2011 festival.
